No, Serpentine Hair is not run by a conspiracy theorist/rabid anti-technology nut who wants to convince you that the sulfates found in most shampoos cause cancer. In fact, that claim has been proven to be a bogus Internet rumor. We want to be a little more responsible and a little less alarmist than that with our product claims; we'd rather enlighten you than frighten you into buying our products. (While we're big on not testing relatively frivolous things like cosmetics and cleaning agents on animals, we'd like to respect the intelligence of our fellow human beings, as well.) However, while the sulfates and other surfactants used in most commerical haircare products aren't going to kill you, they will wreak havoc on your hair shaft and scalp, giving so many of us a case of Gorgon Head. You see, sulfates, etc. are typically used by the hair and body care industry as a cheaper way to create lather (which is a merely aesthetic and unnecessary byproduct of shampooing,) and to break down dirt and oils. (Serpentine Hair products do lather, but this is the natural result of a more traditional soapmaking process using plant oils rather than cheap chemicals.) While sulfates, surfactants, and harsh detergents break down the dirt and oils that make hair look greasy and dirty, they also strip out all the natural oils and beneficial bacteria that your hair and scalp need to stay shiny and healthy. The result? Dry, damaged, frizzy hair, often accompanied by an itchy, flaky scalp. (By the way, here's the link to an unbiased scientific study that verifies our claims about sulfates/surfactants; we invite you to check out the research.) I used to spend stupid amounts of money on leave-in treatments and other expensive gimmicks to get my hair to behave itself in some way, but then I got turned on to soaps and shampoo sans sulfates and my hair has been a lot better ever since. Bottom line is this: Our products don't have some magical hair-repair ingredient; they merely clean your head while allowing your hair and scalp to heal themselves from the ill effects of cheap commercial chemicals. So please feel free to browse our catalog and shoot us an e-mail with any questions you might have; we here at Serpentine Hair welcome interaction with our customers as well as eyeballs on our website! Cheers!
